YouTube parental controls and daily time limits

How to make YouTube safer for kids: YouTube Kids, supervised accounts, restricted mode and the time limits you can set on iPhone.

Last updated 1 October 2026 · 2 min read

YouTube is where many children first learn, laugh and fall down rabbit holes. You can make it safer and more limited without banning it. Menus and names are updated regularly, so check Google's and YouTube's help pages when something does not match.

Option 1: YouTube Kids

YouTube Kids is a separate app designed for younger children. In the parent settings you can:

  • Choose a content level based on age
  • Hide search so they only see approved content
  • Set a timer that closes the app
  • Review watch history and block videos or channels

It is the best choice for younger children, with the caveat that filters are not perfect.

Option 2: Supervised experiences on YouTube

For older children, a parent-managed Google account (through Family Link) can give a supervised YouTube experience with content settings suited to their age. Parents can adjust settings as the child grows.

Option 3: Restricted Mode

Restricted Mode hides content that may be unsuitable. It can be turned on in the YouTube app and locked on a browser. It is a filter, not a guarantee.

Time limits on iPhone

Use Apple's Screen Time to limit YouTube itself:

  1. Settings, Screen Time, then App Limits.
  2. Add Limit, choose the YouTube or YouTube Kids app, set the time, and Add.
  3. Turn on Block at End of Limit.

Tackle the habits too

  • Turn off autoplay, so videos do not roll on forever.
  • Use bedtime and take-a-break reminders where available.
  • Watch together sometimes and talk about what they like.
  • Teach the rule: if it looks shocking, check before you share.

Good habits to talk about

  • Ads and sponsored videos are not always labelled clearly.
  • Comments can be unkind; younger children should not read them.
  • Never share personal information in comments.

A different approach

Rather than a flat limit, many families let children earn video time. See earn screen time. For the wider picture see our parental controls guide.
