Coding for kids: where to start in 2026
A guide to starting coding by age: unplugged games, block-based tools like Scratch, and first steps into text languages.

Coding is giving a computer step-by-step instructions. Children can start earlier than you might think, and the first steps do not need a computer at all.
Ages 5 to 7: unplugged and playful
Learn the ideas first:
- Sequences: do this, then this, then this.
- Loops: repeat something.
- If, then: make a choice.
Use games: write instructions for a "robot" to get across the room, or follow a treasure map with arrows. Simple floor robots and picture-based apps help, too.
Ages 8 to 10: block coding
Block-based tools such as Scratch let children snap together instructions, with no typing and no syntax errors. They can make animations, stories and simple games. Aim to finish small projects rather than start big ones.
Ages 10 to 12: first text language
When blocks feel easy, try a text language with a grown-up. Python is a common first choice because the code is readable. Roblox's Luau and JavaScript are popular for kids who love games and web pages.
Make it about something they love
Children stay with coding when it helps them make what they care about: a game, a story, a joke, a pet website. Connect it to design, see game design for kids and how to make a game on Roblox.
Where AI fits
AI tools can write code, but children learn by writing it. Use AI to explain an error, not to produce the whole project. See AI projects for kids.
Tips for parents
- Learn alongside them; you do not need to be an expert.
- Celebrate finishing, not just starting.
- Let them get stuck for a while before helping.
- Keep sessions short.
Is it worth it?
Not every child will become a programmer, but coding teaches breaking problems into steps, patience and testing, skills that help everywhere.
