Screen time apps that make kids earn their time

How earn-your-time screen time apps work, what to look for, and how they compare with plain blockers and Apple's built-in Screen Time.

Last updated 1 October 2026 · 2 min read

Most screen time apps work by blocking. A smaller group works differently: they let children earn time by doing something useful, such as learning, reading or chores. Here is how to judge them.

Blockers vs earn-based apps

Blockers set daily limits, schedules and block lists. They are simple and strict. The child sees them as the thing that says no.

Earn-based apps connect time to activity. The child completes tasks and collects time or coins, then spends them. The child feels in control, and the rules are the same for everyone.

What to look for

  • What earns time? Learning content, chores you approve, reading, or just a daily amount.
  • Your control. Daily caps, approval, lock and unlock from your own phone.
  • Real play time. Does the clock run only while the child actually plays?
  • Reliability. Can the child get around it? Apps built on Apple's Screen Time are harder to remove.
  • Privacy. No ads and no data selling.
  • Child experience. Does the child want to open it?

Options to consider

Apple's built-in Screen Time

Free, strong and reliable. It is a blocker with limits, downtime and content settings. See our parental controls guide.

Chore and reward apps

Tools where you assign chores and give rewards. Good for family routines, but usually not connected to screen time directly.

Learning apps with time rewards

Apps where lessons earn time. Bip is one: five-minute AI lessons earn coins, coins wait in a piggy bank, and your child spends them on game time for the apps you choose, such as Roblox or YouTube. It runs on iPhone, uses Apple Screen Time, has no ads or tracking, and is currently in testing with a waiting list.

How to choose

  1. Decide what you want to reward.
  2. Decide how strict you need to be.
  3. Try one for two weeks.
  4. Review with your child.

Combine tools

You can use Apple's controls for the basics and an earn-based app for motivation. See earn screen time: a reward system that works and best parental control apps.
